Psalm 136
Overview
136:1 An exhortation to give thanks to God for particular mercies. Verse 1TitleThis Psalm is little else than a repetition of the preceding, with the addition of the burden, "for his mercy endureth for ever," at the end of each verse; and it was doubtless composed on the same occasion. It seems evidently to have been a responsive song; the first part of the verse being probably sung by the Levites, and the burden by the people.Give thanksPsalm 105:1, 106:1, 107:1, 118:1, 119:68; 2 Chronicles 7:3, 7:6; Ezra 3:11; Jeremiah 33:11 for his mercyPsalm 103:17; 1 Chronicles 16:34, 16:41; 2 Chronicles 20:21; Luke 1:50; Jude 1:21ReciprocalGenesis 19:16 - the Lord; 2 Chronicles 5:13 - he is good; 29:27 - the song; Psalm 89:1 - I will; 95:1 - Come; 100:5 - his mercy; 135:3 - for the Lord; 136:26 - the God of heaven; Isaiah 63:7 - mention; Jeremiah 21:2 - according; Nahum 1:7 - Lord; Habakkuk 3:1 - the sacrifice; James 5:11 - the Lord is Verse 2the GodPsalm 82:1, 97:7, 97:9; Exodus 18:11; Deuteronomy 10:17; Joshua 22:22; 2 Chronicles 2:5; Daniel 2:47ReciprocalPsalm 57:2 - God most; Daniel 11:36 - the God; Revelation 17:14 - Lord Verse 3the Lord1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14, 19:16ReciprocalDeuteronomy 10:17 - Lord of lords; Psalm 57:2 - God most Verse 4who alonePsalm 72:18, 86:10; Exodus 15:11; Job 5:9; Revelation 15:3ReciprocalJob 9:10 - wonders; Psalm 26:7 - tell; 40:5 - Many; 77:14 - the God; 86:8 - neither; 98:1 - for he; 145:12 - make known; Acts 2:11 - wonderful Verse 5In the contrivance of the celestial bodies - in their specific gravities, relations, connections, influences on each other, revolutions, etc.; and in the wonderful adaptation of the atmosphere for the purposes of refracting the light, forming rain, dew, snow, etc., are exhibited the most astonishing displays of the Divine wisdom.

The rays of the sun falling on the atmosphere, are refracted and diffused over the whole of the hemisphere of the earth immediately under his orb; while those rays of that vast luminary which, because of the earth's smallness in comparison with the sun, are diffused on all sides beyond the earth, falling on the opaque disc of the moon, are reflected back on the lower hemisphere, or the part of the earth opposite the sun. But the reflected light being 50,000 times less in intensity than that of the sun, there is a sufficient distinction between day and night, though each is ruled and determined by one of these two great lights.
