Forster says that there is now a place situated in the vicinity of Pelusium called Safnas, which may be a vestige of the ancient name. It appears to have been the very first town in Egypt, in the road from Palestine, that afforded tolerable accommodation for the fugitives. It was at this place that, according to Jerome and several of the ancients, tradition says the faithful Jeremiah was stoned to death by these rebellious wretches, for whose welfare he had watched, prayed, and suffered every kind of indignity and hardship. But the former part excludes from the number of those who should escape every individual of those who are properly termed "the remnant of Judah;" those who had willingly and rebelliously "set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to dwell there," on a presumption that they knew better than God how to consult their own restoration. The few, then, who were destined to escape, were to be such as had come into the land of Egypt with Johanan by compulsion, or had previously fled thither, or in some other less offensive manner, and chanced to be there when the storm burst upon them.which areIsaiah 30:1-3 shall escapeJeremiah 44:27, 42:17; Matthew 23:33; Romans 2:3; Habakkuk 2:3 which theyJeremiah 22:26, 22:27, 42:22 have a desireHeb. lift up there soulfor none44:28; Isaiah 4:2, 10:20; Romans 9:27, 11:5, 11:6Reciprocal2 Kings 19:31 - For; Ezra 9:8 - a remnant; Nehemiah 1:2 - that had escaped; Jeremiah 44:7 - to leave; 50:20 - I will pardon; Ezekiel 6:8 - General; 7:16 - they; 20:38 - they shall; Obadiah 1:17 - deliverance; Romans 13:2 - power Verse 15all theJeremiah 5:1-5; Genesis 19:4; Nehemiah 13:26; Proverbs 11:21; Isaiah 1:5; Matthew 7:13; 2 Peter 2:1, 2:2ReciprocalLeviticus 10:1 - put incense; 2 Chronicles 28:23 - sacrifice to them; Proverbs 27:22 - General; Isaiah 5:18 - draw; Jeremiah 18:15 - burned; 44:9 - the wickedness of your; 44:19 - we burned; 44:24 - all Judah; 44:25 - Ye and; Ezekiel 33:25 - lift up; Hosea 11:2 - burned Verse 16weJeremiah 16:15-17, 8:6, 8:12, 18:18, 38:4; Exodus 5:2; Job 15:25-27, 21:14, 21:15; Psalm 2:3, 73:8, 73:9; Isaiah 3:9; Daniel 3:15; Luke 19:14, 19:27ReciprocalNumbers 25:6 - in the sight of Moses; Deuteronomy 29:19 - that he bless; Judges 17:6 - right; 1 Samuel 8:19 - refused to obey; Nehemiah 9:29 - yet they; Psalm 81:12 - they walked; 107:11 - contemned; 119:21 - cursed; Proverbs 13:13 - despiseth; 21:29 - hardeneth; 27:22 - General; Ecclesiastes 8:3 - stand; 11:9 - walk; Isaiah 28:12 - yet; 30:15 - and ye; Jeremiah 3:3 - a whore's; 6:16 - We will; 7:26 - they hearkened; 17:27 - ye will; 42:13 - General; 44:24 - Hear; 44:28 - shall know; Ezekiel 3:7 - Israel will; 14:3 - and put; 22:24 - General; 24:12 - her great; 33:31 - and they; Daniel 9:6 - have we; Hosea 11:2 - they called; Zechariah 1:4 - but; 7:11 - they refused; Matthew 21:29 - I will not; 25:24 - I knew; Mark 7:9 - Full; 12:3 - and sent; Luke 6:49 - that heareth; Acts 14:18 - scarce; 1 Thessalonians 2:13 - because; James 1:23 - General Verse 17whatsoeverJeremiah 44:25; Numbers 30:2, 30:12; Deuteronomy 23:23; Judges 11:36; Psalm 12:4; Mark 6:26 queen of heavenor, frame of heaven. As the Sun was worshipped, not only under the name of baal shamayim "Lord of heaven," but also by that of Molech or King; it is likely also that the Moon was adored as melecheth hashshamayim "the Queen of heaven." So the Orphic hymn addressed to the Moon begins Κλυθι θεα ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΑ, "Hear, goddess Queen." And Homer, in his Hymn to the Moon, addresses her, Χαιρε, ανασσα, θεα "All hail, Queen, goddess." In Epiphanius, we find some women of Arabia, towards the end of the fourth century, had set up another queen of heaven, the Virgin Mary, too well known since under that name and character, whom they likewise worshipped as a goddess, by holding stated assemblies every year to her honour, and by offering a cake of bread in her name; whence these heretics were called Collyridians, from the Greek κολλυρις, a cake.
